As a result of the decision in 1975 by the GDR (East German Government) to accord the status
of National Technical Monuments to their narrow gauge railways, they survived through the
reunification of Germany into the 21st century. Some still provide a public transport service to
residents and, in the case of the Harz system, also carry freight, others have become heritage
railways operated by volunteers.
